1 Star Returned
We ordered this receiver and installed it with our existing surround sound system, replacing a Yamaha receiver that had died.

Within 4 days, the receiver simply turned off. The next morning we were able to turn it on again but it only stayed on for about 5 minutes before it shut down again.

It sounded fine while it worked but we packed it up and shipped it back.

We are going to try something else.

5 Stars More functions then I could ever use
This has been a great performing stereo right out of the box. There are so many options to change on it that there has been a bit of a steep learning curve, but really enjoying it now that it’s all set the way I want it. So many inputs and outputs that I don’t know how it could not have what you need. This was by far the best bang for your buck that I could find without sacrificing any quality.

5 Stars Just what I wanted
The receiver does everything I wanted it to do. I like how it upconverts to component via the red/white/yellow rca’s. I have many things hooked up to it and this is a great feature for me. I have HD cable/xbox 360/wii hooked up to the components and I have my Macbook/ipod/and video camera hooked up to the rca’s. All of these go into the receiver and 1 component cable out to my Plasma. All works seemlessly!

The price was great! Shipping on time as well.

works great, but the manual is on the high end of technical details. fast shipping.

5 Stars Incredible value
The AVR-1709 is an exceptional buy. I got this for 218.00 delivered including tax. The Multi-EQ function works really well. I have 5 Polk ceiling mounted speakers and with my older Onkyo 602 it seemed most of the time that you could tell that the speakers were in the ceiling. After running the multi-EQ on the 1709, the speakers disappear, but also sound much more open and life-like, and not just from a single “sweet spot”. CD music is amazing as well.

The Dynamic EQ and Dynamic volume are great for watching television since the “so-called Engineers” at the TV stations are basically 2nd string A-V club dropouts these days, with no clue about level equalization of programming material. With both engaged you can move from channel to channel, and never touch the volume, you don’t have to dive for the mute button when a commercial comes on, or crank up the volume to hear dialog, only to get deafened at the next commercial break.

I use this with a Harmony remote and it integrated into existing activities with ease, needing only the new functions to be added.

The gripes about no audio pass-through are made by idiots. I have DVD player via component and DVR/Cable box via HDMI directly to the TV, with Optical from device to 1709. HDMI switching is not utilized. TV sound is never used. The Harmony handles all input switching like a charm. I even have a function for Patio music using the zone 2 function.
